ToonSchool Stuff! | Term03.2024

Greetings ToonSchoolers and those who support them enthusiastically.

I trust that you are well and that, whether you are Drawing or Painting, Slicing or Stitching, Hammering or Pruning, you embrace every opportunity to get lost in your Creativity.

Looking Back on the 2nd ToonSchool Term.

We covered some good Creative Ground during the 2nd Term and the works produced by the ToonSchoolers were a delight to behold.

Projects included the Cartoon Fundamentals of Drawing the Human Body in Different Proportions, some Laboratory Animals for Animal of the Day, Singing Poses for Bodies in Motion, and Themed Projects consisting of Dreams, the Design of a Personal Fandom-inspired Coat of Arms and The Secret Life of Parents where Parental Units were unmasked as anything from Aliens to being Brainwashed.

The Art of Perspective made its appearance through Skyscrapers, Skylines, Bridges and Labyrinths, with the first of two Colour Theory Segments for the year focusing on utilising the Colour Indigo as the Key Colour in an Artwork.

In Retrospect, it seemed to have been quite a Nature-inspired Term.

Firstly, apart from Skirts & Folds, Special Powers and the Human Mouth, the How to Draws featured Rocks and Pebbles, Spiders, Clouds and Lightning.

Secondly, the Forest Sessions, the Jewels in the 2nd Term Crown, brought forward Drawings of Moss-covered Tree Stumps and delicate Foliage growing around Giant Tree Roots. We also addressed the different ways to create Variation when depicting Shrubs, Bushes & Brambles; and had a rather Insightful and Inspirational Segment on the Drawing of Tree Bark.

I am blown away by the visible leap forward in the ToonSchoolers’ Forest Environments. Approaching the Forest layer by layer and addressing separately the Kinds of Vegetation and the Components of Trees, are paying off beautifully and are reflected in the work of every person who attended the Sessions, myself included.

Well done to everyone who thus far attended the Forest Sessions, you are truly pushing the envelope with this one.

The next two Forest Sessions will take place on 15 & 17 August and 24 & 26 October 2024 and I am beyond excited about what they will bring to our Skill Sets.

Finally, the Cartoon Theory Segments included new additions to both the General Cartoon History Timeline and the Supers Timeline, where we finally wrapped up all the Superheroes Published in Comic Books in 1939. We also addressed the Elements commonly featured in Character Design Sheets and enjoyed some good, Old-school Cartoon Slapstick through the Laws of Cartoon Physics.

The ToonSchoolers’ Gallery

Follow the Link to the NEW ToonSchooler’s Gallery which Showcases a selection of Artworks produced during the 2nd Term by attending ToonSchoolers.

If you or your Young Artist’s work is not featured in the Gallery, it is simply because I didn’t have any of your Artwork and couldn’t Find or Harvest anything from your Instagram.

ToonSchoolers who wish to have their work featured in the Gallery are asked to supply me with the following:

A: A Photograph of your strongest Artwork/s, the ones you wish to brag with.

    • Preferably Artworks that were inspired by ToonSchool Project Briefs.

    • The Photograph should be Clear and Well-lit, avoiding sinister Phone Shadows.

B: Links to your Online Portfolio Platforms.

On the 3rd Term Drawing Board

I know I always say this, but the Syllabus for the upcoming Term is looking very exciting!

Subject Matter includes, but is not limited to, Automated Beings, Animal of the Day, a Fantasy Beast, a new Environment to explore as a Background, Themed Projects inspired by Literature, Professions, Caricatures and our Annual Painting Parody.

For those who were wondering out loud in class about Anatomy, a fair number of Exercises in Human Anatomy are lined up for the 2nd Semester. This includes Feet as well… just as a word of Warning.

I look forward to another Term filled with Clever and Skillful Interpretations of the Subject Matter.
