Greetings ToonSchoolers and those who support them enthusiastically.
I trust all is well as we find ourselves -way too suddenly, I may add- staring down the Slopes of the Path towards the End of 2024.
A Look Back on the 3rd ToonSchool Term.
Examples of Work mentioned below can be viewed in the ToonSchooler’s Gallery:
It is fair to say that the 3rd Term was successfully Seized, Wrestled to the Ground and Propped up to be used as part of a Still Life.
We kicked off the Term with our Annual Painting Parody, which seems to be a favourite among the ToonSchoolers judging by their excellent interpretations. (Also, they told me). This year, Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer stepped up to be parodied in the most impressive ways.

It was a Productive Term as far as Human Anatomy is concerned. We covered the Eyes and Eyebrows and how they can be utilised to depict various Facial Expressions; the Human Arms and how to Draw them when they’re Crossed. We also thoroughly examined the Human Torso, both Male and Female, Front and Back. This was not a Syllabic Choice, but quite Serendipitous as every How to Draw revealed the need to explore the Subject Matter further. Well done to all who executed these How to Draws.
Other Drawing Projects took us to the Fantasy Realms where we explored Automated Beings, Mermaids and the Phenomenon of Being Turned into Stone. The How to Draw Segments jumped on the Fantasy Bandwagon with Practical Sessions on Drawing Magic Carpets and Flying Saucers. Other unrelated How to Draws included Army Tanks and the Wind, an Element that proves to be Complex in its Simplicity.
For Character Design, we drew our Inspiration from the Culinary Industry’s Chefs, Cooks and Lunch Ladies while Costume Design favoured South Africa’s National Flower, the Protea, as Inspiration. The regular Animal of the Day Segment addressed Swans through Fairy Tales such as The Ugly Duckling, Swan Lake and The Six Swans, while the Koala Bear from Down Under lent itself to be Anthropomorphized into Human Form.
The ToonSchoolers turned Environments into wondrous Worlds with the Drawing Project on Windmills and the Project on the Fundamentals of Creating Interiors.

The 3rd of the Forest Sessions elevated us into the Forest’s Canopy where we used the Understory Layer as a Background for an Artwork. The Session’s How to Draw addressed the Construction of Tree Branches and Forest Vines. The 4th and Final Forest Sessions take place on 24 & 26 October 2024.

In Preparation for Inktober 2024, we addressed the Inking Technique of Spotting Blacks which is the Strategic Use of Solid Pools of Black within an Artwork. The Session took on the form of a Practical Demo and the ToonSchoolers took to the Technique like Dragons to Flight.

Finally, in the Cartoon Theory, we explored the Storytelling Technique of Breaking the 4th Wall which occurs when Fictional Characters acknowledge their Fictionality. The Segment Series consisted of the Origins of, Reasons for and Ways in Which the 4th Wall Can Be Broken and the Comic Book Characters and Cartoons known for Breaking the 4th Wall.
Across the Board, the ToonSchoolers truly stepped up in their Interpretations and Execution of the Subject Matter and everyone should be so proud of what they’ve accomplished this Term. I know I am very proud of you, so you may as well join in.
Attending regular Art Classes shows Commitment and Dedication to your Work and the Development of your Skills. It is time that you set aside to work on your Art. Well done, ToonSchoolers, not only did you show up for ToonSchool, but you showed up for your Art and it reflects beautifully in the Evolution of your Work.

On the 4th Term Drawing Board
The Syllabus for the upcoming Term is looking very exciting from where I’m sitting.
Subject Matter includes, but is not limited to, the Art of Caricatures -a ToonSchool first; the 2nd Colour Theory Segment for the year; more fascinating Environments to Explore; what’s left of Human Anatomy, i.e. Arms and Hands, Legs and Feet; Bodies in Motion; Fantasy Beings; and a few special Drawing Themes that will be kept under wraps until the actual Sessions.
As always, it is a privilege to be part of these talented Young Artist’s Creative Journeys. I look forward to another fun-filled Illustrative Term with Clever and Skillful Interpretations of the Projects as we delve forever deeper into the World of Drawing.
Thank you for your ongoing Support, Attendance, Positive Feedback and Sharing, Clicking and Posting on your Groups and Social Media. It is greatly appreciated.
May the Creative Force be with you!
V.
